When Yamim Tovim occur over Shabbat

כ"ה אלול ה' אלפים תשס"ט

Yom Kippur has the same laws as Shabbat in regard to carrying items from place to place. Also, this year 2009, the forthcoming Yamim Tovim - Rosh Hashana, Succot, and Shmini Atzeret take place over Shabbat.

Since many people are accustomed to eat out at friends' places during Yom Tov, and large numbers of people go to Shule on the Yamim Tovim and on Yom Kippur, we want to remind our readers, users of the Melbourne Eruv, that the boundaries of the Eruv are not always straightforward.

In particular, the northern boundary of the Eruv is rather complicated, and does NOT extend to Dandenong Road except for one section. The following notes read in conjunction with the map (PDF or html) should assist. The notation in brackets after the street name indicates whether that street runs north ??’ south (N/S) or east-west (E/W). In the following notes regarding the northern boundary on a (N/S) street, either side may be within the Eruv but for an (E/W) street, only the southern side is within the Eruv.

The northern boundary of the Eruv starts at St Kilda Junction. It proceeds along St Kilda Road (N/S western side only) to Charnwood Road (E/W). It then turns south into Crimea Street (N/S western side only) to Redan Street (E/W). It then turns from Redan Street into Chapel Street (N/S western side only) then into Alma Road (E/W).

From Alma Road it turns into Alexandra Street (N/S eastern side only) to Murchison Street (E/W). It doglegs across Lansdowne Road into Hughenden Road (E/W) to Orrong Road (N/S eastern side only). From Orrong Road it turns into Dandenong Road (E/W) and continues to Normanby Avenue.

Please note that Normanby Avenue is a few streets west of Normanby Road, which intersects with Dandenong Road near the railway bridge.

Some practical examples:

  • When walking to St Kilda shule, if one needs to stay within the Eruv, then you must walk on the southern side (the Caulfield side) of Alma Road between Alexandra Street and Chapel Street.
  • If someone needs accommodation near the St Kilda shule, the Charnwood Motel, being on the southern side of Charnwood Road is within the Eruv.
  • Lansdowne Road, north of Hughenden Road, i.e up to Dandenong Road, is outside the Eruv.
  • The Emmy Monash Home is within the Eruv, but one must stay on the footpath and not move onto the roadway (of Dandenong Road).

thank you for emphasizing the tricky parts of the Eruv. Many people have made an error! Reminders should be published periodically. shana tova umetuka. rch
